So why the Russian doll paper beads?

I have always loved Russian dolls; I love the colorful images and happy faces.

When I was thinking about what to do for my next free printable, I happened to see a Russian doll image.

So I started playing around with creating my own image and ended up with this one.

Creating it was a challenge for me but I quite like her now that she has materialised and I love the beads.

In the video tutorial, I show you how to use the free printable.

You will see that I use my home made popsicle stick bead roller to make my beads.

My home made popsicle stick bead roller.

You can of course easily make your own popsicle stick bead roller but I do sell them in my Etsy shop.

After I came up with the idea of rolling flat, square or rectangular beads this way, I added a foam grip to help hold it.

Some people in my workshops find it quite hard to hold a bead tool because of arthritis.

So I am always looking for ways to make it easier and using popsicle sticks with foam grips does help some people.

What about the block of wood you see me use to ‘walk’ my bead as I roll it?

In the video, you see me rolling my popsicle stick along a block of wood to roll my bead strips.

There are two reason for this – one it is easier that holding tghe bead strip while rolling and two, it’s cleaner.

By that I mean it helps me stop getting glue stick residue on the glossy paper I use to make the beads.

When I roll the strips against my fingers as opposed to the wood, I often end up with glue on the outside of the bead.

It’s when I smooth down the end; sometimes, even solid glue will squish out and get on my fingers.

And as I stick the end down, sometimes I end up with a glue residue on the paper – not a good look on glossy paper.

If you have that problem too (I may just be messy!), try rolling along a block of wood as I do in the video.

And instead of using your fingers to stick the end down, just roll it over the block a few times with pressure.

This is what my bracelet looks like…

It’s got quite a ‘folksy” feel to it. Very different to my usual taste which is quite boho/hippy. But I do love this for a change.
